Lencois Maranhenses and the Delta of Parnaiba

Lencois Maranhenses, Maranhao, and the Delta of Parnaiba, is situated on the border between the states of Maranhao and Piaui. Both the places are situated in the lap of lush nature. when you visit the place you can see huge white sand dunes which looks like white desert. Between June and September, these dunes get filled with ponds of crystal-clear waters, with colors varying between blue and emerald green.

The place is rare and one of its kind after Nile River’s, in Egypt, and the Mekong River’s, in Vietnam. It has over 70 islands, spreaded in about 2,700 km² of area.

Day 1: On the first day of tour visit Lencois Maranhenses city of Barreirinhas, located 250 km far from Sao Luis, which is the capital of Maranhao. it is the start point of the tour and from there, you can head to rest destination, on 4 x 4 traction jeep or truck. The dunes can be only reached by these two way of transportation.

On the first day, visit Lagoa Bonita. The tour begins with the crossing of the Preguicas river, which separates Barreirinhas from the Lencois Maranhenses National Park, where most of the attractions of the place exist.After crossing the river, the vehicle moves forward through sand roads and streams and parks next to the pond. After a short walk, you can capture this break taking view in your eyes for lifetime.On the way back to Barreirinhas, you can stop at a food point and try the delicacies to retain your energies.

Day 2: On the second day head to Lagoa Azul. On the way stop at the Mandacaru Lighthouse, located besides the river mandacaru. Quickly take 160 steps and see panaromic view from the top of the light house.Then, go to Lagoa Azul, which is as stunning as Lagoa Bonita. A 35-minute jeep ride takes you to this paradise. Try reqching the place in the afternoon, so you can witness the view of magical Sunset.

Day 3:Wake up early and leave for Parnaiba, Opt for going in the morning, as it will take around 4 hours to reach the place. When you arrive, go to Porto das Barcas, one of the main touristic attractions of the city, located next to the bridge connecting the mainland to Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel. Explore the city on your own, see the narrow streets and old buildings, the location has various bars and restaurants. It’s a great place to eat, rest and take a walk, before heading to the next destination.

After this go to Praia da Pedra do Sal, situated on Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel, which is a river beach and one of the most pleasant attractions of the region. Its 8 km of beach are mostly frequented by locals and fishermen. The calm waters are suitable for swimming and practicing water sports, such as kite surfing.

Day 4: At the end day of the tour, the first destination is Lagoa do Portinho, and then Praia do Coqueiro, which is the second destination, it is an old fishing village located in Luis Correia, near to Parnaib. The beach has calm waters, the water is home colorful reefs, which can be seen during low tides. After exploring it all, have some delicious in local restaurants that serve local fish dishes.
